NOx Technical Code 2008
A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexesDefinition
Mandatory under MARPOL Annex VI.
The NOx Technical Code 2008, adopted by MEPC.177(58), is the mandatory procedure for certifying, testing, and verifying the NOx emissions of marine diesel engines over 130 kW under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 13. It defines the test cycles, the parent-engine and engine-group concepts, the Technical File, and the onboard verification methods (engine parameter check, simplified measurement, and direct measurement). Compliance with the applicable Tier I, II, or III limit is shown through the EIAPP certificate the Code requires. It entered into force with the revised Annex VI on 1 July 2010 and applies according to the engine’s construction date and operating area.
