Nydam Boat
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Iron Age oared vessel found in Denmark.
The Nydam boat is a clinker-built oak rowing vessel of about 310 to 320 CE, recovered from a bog at Nydam in southern Jutland, Denmark, where it had been deposited as a war booty offering. About 23 meters long and propelled by 30 oars without a sail, it represents the pre-Viking Iron Age vessel that preceded the sailing longship and shows the development of clinker construction in northern Europe. It is displayed at Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig and is a key link in the lineage of Scandinavian shipbuilding.
