Onboard Operational Limitations Information

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS II-1/8-1.

Onboard operational information is the data provided to the master after a flooding casualty so safe-return-to-port and survivability decisions can be made. SOLAS II-1/8-1, with the explanatory notes in resolution MSC.421(98), requires passenger ships built on or after 1 January 2014, of 120 m in length or with three or more main vertical zones, to have either onboard stability computers or shore-based support that compute residual stability and system capabilities after damage. Where onboard computers are used, at least two independent units are fitted. The framework also covers operational limitations posted to the master that constrain loading and routing to keep the ship within its assessed envelope.
