Ordinary Seaman

The ordinary seaman is the entry-level deck rating, the first rung of the deck department for a new seafarer without an able seaman certificate. The OS works under the boatswain on deck maintenance, mooring, and cargo watches, and accumulates the approved sea service needed for the STCW Regulation II/5 able seafarer deck qualification. Ratings forming part of a navigational watch must meet STCW Regulation II/4 standards.
