Outline of Continuing Professional Development

Continuing professional development is the structured, recorded learning that professional bodies such as the Nautical Institute and IMarEST require members to maintain after qualification. CPD keeps a member’s competence current with changing regulation and technology and is a condition of retaining chartered or fellowship status. It complements the five-year revalidation of STCW certificates, which requires evidence of continued professional competence or recent sea service.
