Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC)

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

IMO Res. MSC.215(82).

The Performance Standard for Protective Coatings, IMO Resolution MSC.215(82), sets a target coating life of 15 years for dedicated seawater ballast tanks and the double-side spaces of bulk carriers, made mandatory through SOLAS II-1/3-2. It prescribes surface preparation to Sa 2.5, a nominal dry film thickness of 320 micrometers in a two-coat epoxy system, stripe coating of edges and welds, and salt-limit and humidity controls during application. Compliance is documented in the Coating Technical File, which follows the ship through survey.
