Pilot Transfer Arrangements

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS V/23.

Pilot transfer arrangements are the ladders, hoists, and access equipment that let a pilot board and leave a ship safely. SOLAS V/23 sets the requirements, last substantially revised by resolution MSC.308(88), in force 1 July 2012, with the equipment built and rigged to the standards in IMO Assembly resolution A.1045(27). The pilot ladder, combination arrangement with an accommodation ladder where freeboard exceeds 9 m, side lights, and a responsible officer in attendance are all specified. Securing points, manropes, and the maximum 9 m climb are checked at survey. Defective arrangements are a frequent cause of pilot-boarding casualties and a port state control item.
