Poseidon Principles

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Framework for integrating climate considerations into ship finance.

The Poseidon Principles, launched in 2019, are a voluntary framework for banks and lessors to measure and disclose whether their shipping loan portfolios align with the IMO greenhouse gas reduction trajectory. Each signatory calculates a portfolio carbon-intensity score against an annually declining decarbonization trajectory, using ship emissions data drawn from the IMO Data Collection System, and reports it publicly. A parallel framework, the Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance, applies the approach to hull and machinery underwriters. They are a market-led complement to the IMO and EU regulatory measures, not a regulation.
