Probabilistic Damage Stability
X9. Cargo Securing, Lashing and Stability VocabularyDefinition
SOLAS Ch II-1 Part B-1 framework using R and A indices.
Probabilistic damage stability replaces fixed damage cases with a statistical method under SOLAS II-1 Part B-1. The ship must achieve an attained subdivision index A at least equal to a required index R, where R rises with the number of persons carried. A is the sum over all flooding scenarios of the probability that a given extent of damage occurs, p, multiplied by the probability that the ship survives that flooding, s, weighted across draft conditions. The factors p and s derive from damage statistics and the residual GZ curve, so subdivision and freeboard trade off directly against survivability.
