Reefer freight

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Freight for refrigerated cargo or containers.

Reefer freight is the rate charged to carry refrigerated cargo, either in temperature-controlled containers or in the holds of a specialized reefer ship. It runs above dry freight because the carrier supplies power, plug-in sockets, pre-trip inspection, monitoring, and the energy to hold the set point, plus the box itself costs more. Perishables such as fruit, meat, fish, and pharmaceuticals move under tight temperature, ventilation, and controlled-atmosphere settings recorded against the booking. Conventional reefer ships have lost share to reefer containers on cellular ships, but the freight still prices the cold-chain service, not just the space.
