Remote Diagnostics
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
Vendor-side troubleshooting of shipboard machinery.
Vendor or shore-side troubleshooting of shipboard machinery using live sensor data and remote access to the equipment’s control system, so a specialist diagnoses faults without attending the ship. It underpins condition-based and predictive maintenance, reading parameters such as exhaust temperatures, vibration, and pressures against expected envelopes. The remote-access path is an OT cyber exposure; IACS UR E26 (cyber resilience of ships) and E27 (onboard systems and equipment) apply to ships contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2024, and IMO MSC.428(98) folds cyber risk into the safety management system.
