River Pilot
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Pilot for inland waterways such as the Elbe or Mississippi.
A river pilot handles ships on inland waterways and estuaries, such as the Elbe, the Scheldt, or the Mississippi, where shifting channels, currents, and bends demand continuous local knowledge. River pilotage is often split into sectors, with pilots changing at defined points along the passage. The role falls within the same IMO Resolution A.960 framework as harbor pilotage and is licensed by the national or river pilotage authority.
