F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

628-mile Australian offshore race since 1945.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart is the 628-mile offshore race from Sydney to Hobart across the Bass Strait, run every Boxing Day since 1945 and one of the toughest in the sport. The 1998 race, hit by a severe storm in the strait, killed six sailors and triggered major changes in offshore safety regulation and crew training in Australia. It draws maxi yachts chasing line honors and a large handicap fleet racing for the Tattersall Cup.
