Roskilde Viking Ship Museum

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Danish institution housing the Skuldelev finds.

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, opened in 1969 to house the five Skuldelev ships excavated from the fjord in 1962. Beyond displaying the conserved eleventh-century hulls, it operates a working boatyard that builds and sails full-scale reconstructions using traditional methods, including Sea Stallion from Glendalough, a longship reconstruction that sailed to Dublin and back. The museum combines conservation, experimental archaeology, and public interpretation of Viking shipbuilding and seafaring.
