Routeing Measures

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Adopted under SOLAS V/10.

Routeing measures are IMO-adopted schemes, including traffic separation schemes, recommended routes, areas to be avoided, and deep-water routes, that organize traffic in congested or hazardous waters. SOLAS V/10 makes IMO the only international body for adopting them and obliges ships to use adopted mandatory schemes. The general provisions are set in IMO Assembly resolution A.572(14), Ships’ Routeing, as amended. COLREGs Rule 10 governs conduct within a traffic separation scheme. Measures are proposed by coastal states, adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee, and published in Ships’ Routeing. Non-compliance in a mandatory scheme is reportable to the flag state.
