Sea State

D1. Physical and chemical oceanography and marine meteorology

Definition

Description of the wave field, characterized by significant wave height and period.

Sea state describes the condition of the wave field, summarized by significant wave height, characteristic period, and direction, and split into locally generated wind sea and remotely generated swell. It is reported on the WMO sea state code (0 to 9, calm to phenomenal) and historically the Douglas sea scale. Sea state drives ship motions, structural loads, and the wind-stress drag coefficient, and is forecast by spectral wave models.
