Seafarer's Identity Document

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

ILO Convention 185 identity document.

The seafarer’s identity document is the internationally recognized identity record established by ILO Convention 185 of 2003, which revised the 1958 Convention 108. The biometric SID lets a seafarer transit borders for shore leave and crew change without a visa where the convention applies. It is distinct from the seaman’s discharge book, which records sea service, and complements the passport for the specific purpose of seafarer mobility.
