Self-Elevating Unit

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

Jack-up rig category.

A self-elevating unit is a mobile offshore unit with legs that can be lowered to the seabed to raise the hull clear of the water for working on station, the formal term for a jack-up. The IMO Code for the Construction and Equipment of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU Code) defines it as a unit with movable legs capable of raising its hull above the sea surface. Jack-up drilling rigs and wind-farm installation jack-ups are both self-elevating units; they suit shallow to intermediate water depths.
