Shore connection (HVSC)

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

High-voltage shore connection per IEC/IEEE 80005-1.

High-voltage shore connection (cold ironing) lets a berthed ship shut down its diesel generators and draw electrical power from the grid, eliminating in-port engine emissions. The ship-shore interface, voltage, frequency conversion, and safety interlocks follow IEC/IEEE 80005-1 (high voltage, above 1 kV). The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation and FuelEU Maritime mandate onshore power use for many container and passenger ships at TEN-T core ports from 2030.
