Skuldelev Ships

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Five eleventh-century Viking ships excavated 1962 in Roskilde Fjord.

The Skuldelev ships are five eleventh-century Viking vessels deliberately scuttled to block a channel of Roskilde Fjord, Denmark, and excavated in 1962 inside a cofferdam. They include an ocean-going knarr, a longship, a coaster, and a fishing or ferry boat, together revealing the range of Norse shipbuilding for trade, war, and local work. Conserved and displayed at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, they have been reconstructed as sailing replicas, including Sea Stallion from Glendalough, to test their performance at sea.
