SOLAS Reg. II-1/26
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Machinery installation requirements.
SOLAS Chapter II-1 Regulation 26 sets general requirements for machinery installations on cargo and passenger ships. It requires main and auxiliary machinery to keep working under the heel and trim angles a ship meets in service, means to start machinery from a dead-ship condition without outside aid, and protection against overspeed for prime movers and shafting. It calls for arrangements to operate the machinery safely across normal and emergency conditions, and underpins the more detailed steering-gear, electrical, and periodically-unattended-machinery-space requirements that follow it in Part C. It is a foundation rule for engine-room design.
