Stability Information Booklet

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS II-1/5.

The stability information booklet contains the approved loading conditions, hydrostatics, cross curves, and intact and damage stability data the master uses to load the ship within limits. SOLAS II-1/5 and II-1/5-1 require every passenger ship and cargo ship to be inclined on completion and supplied with reliable stability information approved by the administration, in a form the master can readily use. The booklet gives the lightship weight and centers from the inclining test, the GZ curves, the IS Code criteria, and free-surface corrections. Major modifications trigger a lightweight survey and reissue. It pairs with an approved loading computer where one is fitted.
