Suezmax

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Tanker ~150,000-160,000 DWT, largest for Suez Canal pre-deepening.

A Suezmax tanker is the largest crude carrier able to transit the Suez Canal fully laden, set by the canal’s depth and the air draft under the El Ferdan bridge, for a deadweight of roughly 150,000 to 160,000 DWT. The limit has eased as the canal has been deepened and widened, so the practical figure has risen over time. The class sits between the Aframax of 80,000 to 120,000 DWT and the VLCC of 200,000 DWT and above, and is common on West Africa, Mediterranean, and Black Sea crude routes.
