Supramax/Ultramax
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
50,000-65,000 DWT bulker.
Supramax and Ultramax are the two geared dry-bulk classes that sit just below Panamax. The Supramax runs about 50,000 to 60,000 dwt on a length near 190 meters with four cranes of 30 to 35 tonnes. The Ultramax, the newer and larger design, runs about 60,000 to 66,000 dwt on a similar beam, gaining deadweight through a longer hull and better cargo intake while keeping the cranes. Both work the grain, coal, bauxite, steel-product, and minor-bulk trades to ports without shore gear. The Ultramax has become the standard newbuild in the segment, displacing Supramax orders.
