US Caribbean ECA
X69. EGCS Scrubbers, SCR and Marine Air EmissionsDefinition
SOx and NOx Emission Control Area covering waters around Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
The United States Caribbean Sea Emission Control Area, designated under MARPOL Annex VI and in force from 1 January 2014, covers the waters around Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. Inside it, ships must use fuel at or below 0.10 percent sulphur, and engines on ships built from 1 January 2016 must meet NOx Tier III limits. It mirrors the controls of the North American ECA for this separate Caribbean area, and together they form the main SOx and NOx control zones in United States waters.
