Used Oil

A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexes

Definition

Treated under MARPOL Annex I oil definition.

Used oil, including waste lubricating oil and oily residues (sludge), falls under the MARPOL Annex I definition of oil and so under Annex I controls. Oil residues and sludge accumulate in dedicated tanks required by Annex I Regulation 12 and are recorded in the Oil Record Book Part I under Regulation 17. They cannot be discharged at sea: they are burned in an approved incinerator meeting Annex VI Regulation 16 and the MEPC.244(66) incinerator standard, or landed to a port reception facility. Bilge water passes the separate 15 ppm route through the oily water separator under Regulation 14.
