F1. Maritime History

Definition

1797 American heavy frigate preserved at Boston.

USS Constitution is a 44-gun heavy frigate of the United States Navy, launched at Boston in 1797 as one of the six original frigates authorized in 1794. Built with unusually thick live-oak framing, she won several single-ship actions in the War of 1812, most famously over HMS Guerriere, earning the nickname Old Ironsides. Saved from breaking up in 1830 and repeatedly restored, she is the oldest commissioned warship afloat and remains in service as a museum and ceremonial ship at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
