Vessel particulars (LOA, LBP, B, T, GT, NT, DWT)
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
Standard vessel descriptors.
Vessel particulars are the standard set of dimensions and tonnages that describe a ship on its register and in fixtures. The core seven: LOA (length overall, bow to stern), LBP (length between perpendiculars, the waterline length for stability and tonnage), B (breadth or beam, the maximum molded width), T (draft, the depth of the keel below the waterline), GT (gross tonnage, total enclosed volume by the 1969 Tonnage Convention formula), NT (net tonnage, the cargo-earning volume), and DWT (deadweight, the mass of cargo, fuel, stores, and crew a ship carries at its load line). Charterers, port captains, and surveyors quote these figures because berth fit, canal admittance, and port dues all key off them.
