Victualling Officer
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Stores officer historically on Royal Navy and large merchant ships.
The victualling officer historically managed a ship’s provisions and stores, a defined role on Royal Navy ships and large passenger liners responsible for ordering, stowing, and issuing food and consumables. On modern merchant ships the function usually falls to the chief steward or a catering officer rather than a dedicated post. The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 sets minimum standards for food and catering that the role exists to meet.
