Whether in berth or not

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

WIBON, NOR may be tendered whether the vessel is at berth or not.

WIBON, a laytime clause that lets the owner tender a valid notice of readiness whether or not the vessel has reached a berth, provided she has arrived at the port and is otherwise ready. It shifts the risk of berth congestion to the charterer: laytime can start running while the ship waits for a berth. Its companions are WIPON (whether in port or not), WIFPON (free pratique), and WICCON (customs clearance).
