Container freight rate index based on shipper contract data.
The Xeneta Shipping Index (XSI) is a container freight rate benchmark built from crowd-sourced contract rate data reported by shippers and freight forwarders, not from carrier filings. The global XSI measures the average rate of all valid long-term contracts in the market, which distinguishes it from spot indices such as the SCFI; Xeneta also publishes a spot index. The underlying database holds over 400 million contracted ocean and air rates across more than 160,000 trade routes, contributed by large shippers including Unilever, Nestle, and Volvo Group. The XSI gives shippers and carriers a benchmark for contract negotiation rather than a paper-trading settlement reference.
