YPR (Yield per Recruit)

D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resources

Definition

Yield obtained from each individual entering the fishery.

Yield per recruit estimates the lifetime catch weight obtained from each fish entering a fishery, balancing growth against losses to natural and fishing mortality. The Beverton-Holt YPR model finds the fishing mortality and age at first capture that maximize yield without needing a stock-recruit relationship, which makes it useful for data-limited stocks. Growth overfishing occurs when fish are caught before reaching the size that maximizes YPR, the classic argument behind minimum landing sizes and mesh-size rules.
