Zero-Emission Ferry
E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleetsDefinition
Battery-electric short-route ferry.
A short-route passenger or vehicle ferry running on battery-electric power, or on hydrogen fuel cells, producing no exhaust emissions at the point of use. Norway led adoption: the Ampere (MF Ampere), in service on the Lavik to Oppedal crossing from 2015, was the first all-electric car ferry, and Norwegian zero-emission requirements drove dozens more. Battery ferries suit fixed routes with quick shoreside charging; hydrogen variants such as MF Hydra (2023) extend range. The design supports MARPOL Annex VI compliance through zero combustion.
