Holtrop-Mennen method
B1. Naval ArchitectureDefinition
Statistical resistance and powering prediction.
The Holtrop-Mennen method is a statistical resistance and powering prediction built by regression on towing-tank and trial data for merchant hulls. It splits total resistance into frictional (ITTC-57 with a form factor), appendage, wave-making, bulbous-bow, transom, and correlation components, each from a closed-form expression in the main hull parameters ($L$, $B$, $T$, $C_B$, $C_P$, $C_{WP}$, $LCB$). It is the standard first-cut powering tool for conventional ships before model testing.
