Adamite roll

An adamite roll is a cast work roll for rolling mills whose composition sits between cast steel and cast iron: iron base with 1.0 to 2.8 percent carbon, alloyed with nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, giving a free-carbide structure and 35 to 55 HRC hardness. It combines the wear resistance of cast iron with more strength and toughness than gray-iron rolls, so it is used in the intermediate and finishing stands of hot strip, plate, section, and bar mills that produce ship steel. It is a steel-mill consumable in the plate supply chain, not a shipboard component; it is relevant to shipbuilding only as the tooling that rolls hull plate.
