Aframax tanker

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Crude tanker of 80,000-120,000 DWT.

An Aframax is a crude oil tanker of about 80,000 to 120,000 DWT, the name deriving from the Average Freight Rate Assessment tanker rate scale rather than from any waterway limit. It is the largest size that can work flexibly at most crude terminals and is the staple of medium-haul trades in the North Sea, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and intra-Asian routes where a VLCC parcel is too large. Above it is the Suezmax, and the closely sized LR2 designation applies to the same hull when carrying refined products.
