Definition

UV-based ballast water treatment system.

Alfa Laval PureBallast is a ballast water treatment system that disinfects ballast using medium-pressure UV reactors after a 40-micron pre-filter, with no chemicals added. The UV dose damages the DNA of organisms so they cannot reproduce, meeting the IMO BWM Convention D-2 discharge standard and US Coast Guard type approval. PureBallast 3 handles flow rates from about 32 to over 3,000 m3/h and runs at full UV transmittance compensation, so it treats both the uptake and the discharge cycle. Holding times for regrowth do not apply because UV treats at discharge.
