Bagged cargo

Bagged cargo is dry commodity shipped in sacks rather than loose in bulk, covering rice, sugar, flour, cement, fertilizer, and coffee in jute, woven polypropylene, or paper bags of 25 to 50 kg. Bagging raises the stowage factor above the loose-bulk figure because the bags do not pack tight, leaving broken stowage of roughly 10 to 15 percent. It needs dunnage, tiered or block stowage, and ventilation to prevent sweat and caking. Tally is by bag count, and the bill of lading records the number of bags plus said-to-weigh terms.
