Barge berth
C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineeringDefinition
Berth dedicated to inland barge calls.
A barge berth is a berth sized and equipped for inland or coastal barge calls rather than seagoing ships, with shallower draft, lighter fendering, and lower bollard loads matched to barge displacement. It serves river and canal traffic at inland terminals, transshipment quays, and the barge feeder operation at deep-sea container terminals, where barges move boxes to and from the hinterland. Design draft and fender energy follow the barge fleet under CEMT classification, so a Class Va vessel of about 110 m by 11.4 m governs many European barge berths. Dedicated barge berths cut competition with mainline ships for quay length.
