Bay-class patrol vessel
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
Royal Australian/UK patrol class.
The Bay class is a group of eight armed aluminum patrol boats built by Austal for the Australian Customs Service Marine Unit (later Customs and Border Protection), entering service from the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Each boat displaces about 134 tons on 38.2 meters length overall, 7.2 meters beam, and 2.4 meters draft, with twin MTU 16V 2000 diesels for around 20 knots and a range near 1,000 nautical miles. They carry 12 crew and a 7.62 mm machine gun, working border-protection, fisheries, and immigration patrol off northern Australia. The Cape class, also from Austal, succeeded them from 2013 with greater range and endurance.
