Beach Master Unit

A US Navy unit that controls the seaward edge of an amphibious landing beach, directing landing-craft traffic, marking hazards and exits, salvaging stranded craft, and managing the ship-to-shore movement of personnel and cargo. Beachmaster Units (BMU-1 Pacific, BMU-2 Atlantic) form the core of the Navy Beach Group alongside assault craft and amphibious construction battalions. The beachmaster runs the beach the way an air traffic controller runs a runway, sequencing waves of landing craft and clearing obstacles so the landing keeps its tempo.
