Semi-permanent subtropical high pressure system over the North Atlantic.
The Bermuda High is the semi-permanent subtropical anticyclone of the North Atlantic, the western lobe of the Azores-Bermuda high-pressure belt near 30 degrees north. It forms in the descending branch of the Hadley cell, where sinking air warms and suppresses convection. Its clockwise circulation drives the northeast trade winds on its southern flank and the prevailing westerlies on its northern flank, and its position steers Atlantic tropical cyclone tracks: a strong, westward-extended high pushes storms toward the Caribbean and U.S. coast, while a retracted high allows recurvature out to sea. It strengthens and shifts north in summer.
