Brunt Ice Shelf

The Brunt Ice Shelf is an Antarctic ice shelf in the eastern Weddell Sea, home to the British Antarctic Survey Halley Research Station. It has been watched closely since the mid-2010s as two fractures, Chasm 1 propagating north and the Halloween Crack first seen on 31 October 2016, advanced across it. Iceberg A-74, about 1,270 square kilometers, calved in February 2021. A-81, roughly 1,550 square kilometers and around 150 meters thick, calved in January 2023 when Chasm 1 fully extended. After A-81, the shelf accelerated from 1 to 2.5 meters per day to about 4 meters per day toward the sea, prompting relocation of Halley Station.
