Chemical tanker
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
IMO Type 1/2/3 chemical tanker per IBC Code.
A chemical tanker carries liquid noxious and hazardous chemicals in bulk and is built and certified to the IBC Code. The Code assigns each cargo a ship type (1, 2, or 3) by the severity of the hazard, with Type 1 demanding the greatest survival and tank-protection standards and the most inboard cargo-tank location. Construction features include segregated cargo systems, deepwell or submerged pumps, independent or integral tanks with dedicated coatings, and nitrogen inerting. Pollution prevention follows MARPOL Annex II, which categorizes cargoes X, Y, Z, or OS and governs tank washings and residue discharge.
