Class II DP (DP2)
E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleetsDefinition
Single fault in active components does not cause position loss.
DP equipment Class 2 (DP2) is the IMO dynamic-positioning tier requiring redundancy such that no single failure in an active component (thruster, generator, control loop, reference system, or power) causes loss of position. Static components like cabling and pipework are excluded unless protected. Defined in IMO MSC/Circ.645 (1994) and MSC.1/Circ.1580 (2017), DP2 is the common standard for diving support, offshore construction, and cable-lay near installations. It sits between DP1 (no redundancy) and DP3 (redundancy plus physical separation against fire and flood in separate compartments).
