Coastal Tug

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

Harbor or short-sea towage tug.

A tug sized and certified for short-sea and near-coastal towage rather than ocean passages, bridging the harbor tug and the ocean-going tug. It runs more freeboard, range, and seakeeping than a harbor tug and handles coastal barge tows, rig moves within a sea area, and relocation of floating plant. Flag administrations restrict it to a defined trading area or distance from a port of refuge; bollard pull commonly sits in the 20 to 60 tonne range. Hull and equipment standards follow class workboat or tug rules and the flag’s coastal voyage limits.
