Condition of Class (CoC)

A7. Compliance, certification and enforcement

Definition

Class-society notation requiring corrective action by a deadline.

A condition of class, also called a recommendation, is a class-society requirement that the owner carry out a specified action by a set date to keep the ship in class. It is imposed when a survey finds a defect that does not warrant immediate suspension but must be corrected, for example a steel renewal at the next drydocking. Failure to clear a condition of class by its due date leads to suspension or withdrawal of class, which in turn invalidates the statutory certificates the society maintains as the recognized organization.
