Consignee
C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal tradeDefinition
Party to whom goods are consigned.
The consignee is the party named in the transport document as the one entitled to take delivery of the goods at destination. On a straight (non-negotiable) bill of lading or a sea waybill the carrier delivers to the named consignee on proof of identity, with no document surrender. On an order bill the consignee box reads to order or to order of a named party, and delivery follows endorsement and surrender of an original. On an air waybill the consignee is always named and the carrier releases without surrender, since the AWB is non-negotiable. The notify party, often the same firm, only receives the arrival notice.
