Containment system (LNGC)
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
Membrane GTT Mark III/NO96 or Moss spherical.
The cargo containment system of an LNG carrier holds the cargo at about minus 163 degrees Celsius and is regulated under the IGC Code. Two families dominate: membrane systems, where a thin primary barrier of stainless steel or Invar is backed by load-bearing insulation against the inner hull, in the GTT NO96 and Mark III designs; and the Moss self-supporting spherical type. Membrane systems give better hull-volume use and now hold most of the fleet, while the spherical type tolerates partial filling well and is visually distinctive.
