Corbett (Sir Julian)
E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcementDefinition
Theorist emphasizing sea control and joint operations.
Sir Julian Corbett (1854 to 1922), British naval historian and strategist whose Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (1911) argued that command of the sea is usually disputed and limited rather than absolute, that its object is control of sea lines of communication, and that naval power matters chiefly for its effect on a war fought largely on land (the army-navy link). Corbett’s emphasis on sea control and limited war contrasts with Alfred Thayer Mahan’s focus on decisive fleet battle and concentration of force.
